Starting up from inside a corporate

In addition to the two teams participating in the VUNK Accelerator programme today, quite a few teams who did not manage to set up their team during the hackathon weekend in August have independently developing their idea future.

For example Career3, a team from Eesti Telekom, was not able to find developers at a right time, but the energy of the authors of the idea has not run out – quite the opposite.

We caught up with Paul Are and Endo Viires to hear their story and see where are they heading.

What is Career3?

We are developing software for businesses in order to help their employees find a career path best suited for their competencies, and HR departments to find the best people internally for vacant positions.

When and how did you get the idea?

Paul: Over ten years, I have seen people leave MicroLink and Telekom and rotate within a large organisation. I am happy that many managers in Telekom have helped me realise my own potential. Years ago the company MicroLink was smaller and it was easier to spot development opportunities around me and contact other people. But when the companies a much larger it is a complex task to find and involve the right people even for specific projects.

Last year, I structured my thoughts via VUNK and got connected with right people from HR to better understand the issue.

Endo: My ideas actually concurred with those of Paul when I read about his idea in the VUNK platform. This is how our collaboration began.

You were not able to compose a team at Hackathon, how come?

Paul: I was hoping to set up a team before or at the VUNK hackathon but it didn’t work out. Unfortunately, it was very difficult to sell our idea to developers.

I slowed down after the weekend, but then after some talks with the team, we got developers interested in our idea and we are working at full speed again.

My learning point was that we should have done even more preparatory work with our idea before the hackathon in order to engage people.

Why do you work with this idea outside your working hours? What motivates you?

Endo: I can see Career3 helping me to live a healthy and happy life with the people close to me. This is the idea that spurs me on.

Paul: I like to think up things and do them. I truly believe in a problem that there are people coming home from work who don’t like their job and stay complaining about it but don’t do anything or don’t know how to. I would love to find a solution to that and so those people could come home and say, “It was a good day at work”.

What will tomorrow bring for Career3?

Paul: We plan to continue experimenting with the Career3 concept. Maybe we will actually build something in the process. We’ll see.

What is your advice to people who have thought a long time about implementing their cool ideas?

Endo: begin somewhere instead of thinking too long: If you don’t know what to do, go out through the gate and turn the way you feel will bring you the right solution, question or issue.

Even better, do not focus on solving a problem, because we solve problems every day – my happiest moments are those when I can create something new myself.

Paul: There is no point keeping your ideas to yourself… you can’t take the passive role of a passenger, you have to go beyond your limits and your comfort zone. Everyone has fears, but why not try? It’s helpful to learn to do things step by step.

Complete one step, then take another, and so on.
